- The procedure removes the risk of disease transmission (particularly by viruses) or imcompatibilities and allergies inherent in standard homologous blood transfusion from another doner
- Autologous transfusion is only considered when:
- The date of the surgical procedure can be virtually guaranteed
- The patient’s haemoglobin concentration exceeds 110 g/L (135 g/L in women); and
- It is likely that a substantial amount of blood will be lost during the procedure
